Artist’s statementRyan works on an intuitive basis. Personal and general stories are transformed into composite glass tableaux. The tableaux often feature abstracted figures, and at times are combined with vessels. More recently Ryan has been combining found objects and glass. Most recently Ryan started to recycle television screens.
Usually she makes a quick sketch of the idea or forms to be included in her work, then proceeds to make three dimensional objects, often out of clay, sometimes out of cardboard or wood. The next step is to make master molds of these forms, from which she makes waxes, these are then invested into final molds and steamed out, then placed in the kiln so the mould can be filled with glass. Ryan mainly uses lead crystal which after firing is cold worked.
